30 Coats Closer to the Goal of 10,000

Published on October 21, 2013 by Tiffany Coleman

(BOISE) When the goal is 10,000, the number 30 looks like a tiny drop in a bucket. While it may be small, that does not mean its effects go unfelt. Broadview University recently became the first organization in the Treasure Valley to answer a statewide call to collect 10,000 coats. The Boise campus awarded its quarterly charitable giving donation of $500 to the Idaho Youth Ranch. The local nonprofit organization works closely with Bruneel Tire Factory on its annual coat drive for kids campaign.

For the past four years, Bruneel Tire Factory has spearheaded a winter coat drive. The company collects coats, hats and gloves for those who may go without. Each year, the number of cold-weather items that have been donated has risen steadily.

“The response from the community has been huge,” Janiel Dawkins, the project’s coordinator at Bruneel, said. “When we first started doing this, we collected 1,200 coats. The following year, it was 1,500. Last year, it was absolutely unbelievable. We collected 5,000 coats. This year, our goal is 10,000 and we are going to give a coat to any kid who needs one.”

The Idaho Youth Ranch took the money Broadview University donated, along with an additional $75 that was contributed by two of the campus’s community partners, and worked with an online liquidator to buy 30 new coats in a variety of sizes—all at a discounted rate.

By the time January arrives, there will only be a small path between this desk and the printer.

“[Broadview’s] donation will be the first of many made in this office,” Dawkins said. “By the time we get to January, when we start taking these coats to schools, there will only be a small path to the printer.”

“I have seen coats donated in many, many ways,” Stacey Moody, who works for the Idaho Youth Ranch, said. “People buy them from our store shelves and put them in the donation barrels. They clean out their closets and donate them. They also buy them brand new from other places and bring them in. People in general are just really supportive of this effort.”

Coats will be accepted at all Idaho Youth Ranch locations in the Treasure Valley and at all 10 Bruneel Tire Factory locations statewide. There are also three additional collection sites at Tire Factory stores in Parma, Fruitland, and Homedale. The coats will be given out the first week of January when kids return to school following the holiday break.

To help further the coat collection efforts, the Boise campus is currently holding an additional coat drive. All children’s coats received will be donated to the cause. There are two donation barrels located in the campus commons area—one at each entrance. The campus collection drive ends on October 31.
