Making a Difference One Free Scoop at a Time

(BOISE) Scoop after scoop after delicious scoop—a group of students and staff members from BroadviewUniversity recently traded in books and lesson plans for hats and ice cream scoopers. On Tuesday, April 9, the group scooped up 30 different flavors of free ice cream for anyone who showed up at the Ben & Jerry’s Scoop Shop in Downtown Boise. At the end of their two-hour shift, they donated all of the tips they received to a local nonprofit group.

Free Cone Day

A team of Broadview University students and staff served and greeted hundreds of people at Ben & Jerry’s annual Free Cone Day event. The group spent two hours scooping for tips, donating $210 to Genesis Service Dogs.

Each year, Ben & Jerry’s offers free ice cream cones to the public as part its international Free Cone Day. Guest scoopers are invited to work behind the counter—then donate the tips they receive to charity. For the second year in a row, Broadview University was one of the four local groups chosen to participate. And for the second year in a row, the school chose Genesis Service Dogs as its charity of choice. While Broadview University’s group worked inside behind the counter, a large group from Genesis—consisting of several people and dogs—worked to raise awareness outside on the streets.

Genesis Service Dogs is a Meridian-based nonprofit organization that breeds, raises, and trains service dogs. The dogs are then donated to qualified children and adults with special needs. The group, which is entirely run by volunteers, relies on donations to help operate its estimated $15,000 to $20,000 annual budget. Every penny counts.

Free Cone Day“Broadview University raised $210 for us this year,” Danielle Stem, the group’s president, said. “That pays our insurance for a month. It really helps.”

This is the 35th year that Ben & Jerry’s has offered Free Cone Day. Along with Broadview University’s participation, Brighton Corporation scooped for the Boys & Girls Clubs, Boy Scout Troop 40 scooped for its summer camp fund, and Kuna Alcohol/Drug-Free Youth scooped to earn money for its projects.

“This year we gave out 4,794 scoops and raised about $1,200 for our community partners,” Matt Groll, the local Ben & Jerry’s owner, said.

“Thanks, Matt, and all of the ice cream team,” Stem said. “Because of you, we can help families—one dog at a time. [Every donation] helps further our efforts in placing service dogs with those who deserve them.”
