5 Ways to Find Inspiration for Your Next Mobile App
Published on June 21, 2017 by Francis Zablocki
As a society, we are unapologetically hooked on our mobile devices. As the memory and processing capabilities of these devices have grown exponentially over the past few years, so have the possibilities for mobile apps.
While skill in the art of app development is essential, every developer of a highly successful mobile app will tell you it is just as important to be able to develop an idea for an app that appeals to a wide audience. You likely have many ideas you are already considering; however, there are some creative ways to increase your list of possibilities and find inspiration for new and exciting ideas.
1. Ask how can you fill the gaps.
If you want to develop a mobile app that can reach viral status, identify a gap that needs to be filled. When there was no easy way to track store coupons, Ibotta app developers answered with a solution. When there was no easy way to send a picture in a private forum, app developers responded with Snapchat. When there was no easy way to track your meals, micronutrient intake, and workouts (without paying an arm and a leg), app developers at MyFitnessPal answered the call.
Think about your own life. If you could easily access it right from your mobile device, what would save you time, money, or simplify an action? This is a great starting off point for finding new ideas. After you have wracked your own brain, wrack the brains of your friends, family, and acquaintances. Finally, get to know someone whose life is entirely different from yours. For example, if you are a married woman with three children and you work full-time, you may want to speak with an 18-year-old male student with no spouse or children. Find out what types of apps would be useful for his life. The more individuals you are able to learn about, the more likely you are to stumble upon an idea that will appeal to a variety of people.
2. Follow yourself through the day.
Another great exercise that can help you reach inspiration is to follow yourself within your daily activities. How do you accomplish that? As you go through your daily activities, pause and critically assess whether there is an app that could enhance the experience you are having.
When you get out of bed, pause and discover if there is an app idea that could make the process easier or more efficient.
As you complete your workout in the gym, stop and ask yourself who information you are missing. Think about how an app could provide you with that information.
After work in the grocery store line, take a look around and ponder what types of apps could make the experience more pleasant.
Completing this activity in real time, as opposed to reflecting upon your day after it is over, is likely to inspire you in a much more robust way.
3. Peruse the app marketplace.
Another great way to get inspiration is by spending time going through the apps that are presently on the market. Scroll through apps that are succeeding and ask yourself how they could be altered and improved.
But don’t forget to also review apps that aren’t doing so well. Sometimes, you can tie together ideas from several different services that may be unsuccessful as standalone apps but, when combined, are just what an app user is looking for.
Keep an open mind, spend time reading user reviews, and don’t limit your creativity. Some of the best apps on the market were inspired by other similar apps.
How can volunteering inspire you to create a successful app? Not only will you meet new people who will have a wide variety of needs that apps can addresss, but also you will get to understand a segment of your community that you may have never considered as consumers before.
Nonprofits are some of the most well-loved organizations in any community. Your support of these organizations has the opportunity to pay off in spades when the time comes to build your network. Further, these organizations have distinct business needs that major app developers often overlook. Working with individuals who provide an essential, charitable service to your community can provide you with limitless inspiration.
5. Spend time in meditation.
One key element of inspiration is an open mind. When your thoughts are cluttered, and you are overwhelmed with the pressures of work and school, your creative mind is silenced so that “higher-priority” thoughts can become your focus. Whether you enjoy yoga or just a quiet walk through your local park, it is essential that you make a conscious effort to take time to relax and ground yourself. By clearing your mind and listening to your creative voice, you can open yourself to inspiration. Be still. Breathe. Forget your never-ending to-do list for an hour or two and spend time reigniting your creative flame.
