The Daunting Task of Choosing a Career: One Student’s Journey to Discovery
Published on August 27, 2013 by Scott Rudeen
Choosing a career path can be daunting with the many choices and specialties available. So how does one make a decision? There are several ways to explore the options, such as observing someone in your field of interest. Then there are some people, like Alejandro Marroquin, a student in the massage therapy program at Broadview University-Layton, who find their career path while attending school. Here, Alejandro tells his story:
I became a massage therapist because I wanted to help athletes with their injuries, specifically fighters. Later, while I participated in service learning programs and events [outside the classroom], I realized that there were many other people who could benefit from massage. I also realized how much of an impact the “power of touch” has on people, especially the sick and the old. Though, at first I was apprehensive of touching a geriatric client, the gratitude and appreciation I received from them was far more valuable than any tip I have received.
I still want to massage athletes, but I also would like to help those that need it most. The cool thing about the massage therapy career field is that it’s dynamic and flexible. I can do both at the same time. Studying massage has shown me many benefits and opportunities for lifestyle management.
Eastern healthcare philosophies influence the massage therapy field. These encompassing principles are a great foundation to live by. In this fast-paced society I live in it’s comforting to know that there are ways to slow down.
Another benefit I found while studying massage is how someone’s energy, life force, bio-rhythms, or vibration patterns can affect me. Speaking about me, I found that I am not as healthy as I thought I was. Massage has opened my eyes to many ways of health and lifestyle management.
By participating in the different programs, activities, and clubs on campus it is easy to learn what hidden talents and interests are hiding within you.
