When Passion Becomes Profession: Alumna Enjoys New Career Path

As part of their massage therapy degree program, massage students must complete at least 110 clinic hours in order to graduate. This means that many other students, staff and family members are the lucky recipients of free massages.
It was the general consensus at Broadview University–Orem last quarter that Emily Mortensen, who goes by “Emma,” was one of the best massage therapists on campus. Her clinic schedule was always booked, and people requested her by name.
Born and raised in British Columbia, Canada, Emma moved to Utah shortly after graduating high school. She decided to get a degree in dental assisting, but as is the case for many of us, her first career was not the one she wanted to do forever.
With a desire to try something new, Emma decided that becoming a massage therapist would be much more suitable for her lifestyle, allowing her the flexibility to travel and make more money. After looking into many different career colleges, Emma chose Broadview University for its friendly staff and its availability of night classes, since she was working full-time as a dental assistant.
“I was really impressed with how nice everyone was and the school’s willingness to work around my schedule. I knew this was a place I wanted to come to every day,” Emma said.
After two years of working hard in various massage classes such as Kinesthetics (her least favorite) and Clinic (her favorite), Emma graduated with her diploma in massage therapy earlier this year. She now works privately out of her own home with aspirations to work in an upscale clinic in Park City, Utah.
What is the best advice she can give to massage therapy students?
“Take advantage of your class time and learn everything you can from good instructors like Vicki Bant,” Emma said. “It goes by so fast, so get as much out of it while you can!”
