Dog Days of Summer: How Broadview Stays Cool in the Summer Heat

Published on August 14, 2013 by Staff Writer

The heat of summer can cause us to do crazy things. We launch ourselves like cannonballs into public pools, we try every snow cone flavor known to man and their subsequent combinations (the strawberry-watermelon-coconut-cherry flavor is the best!), and we spend our entire life’s savings on a trip to Disneyland. But all of this is completely understandable because it helps us forget the fact that it is, indeed, 100 degrees outside.

The Dog Days of Summer event at Broadview University-Orem is an annual favorite among those looking to add some flavor to their summer. Sponsored by the vet tech program, the event encourages students and their families to enjoy fun summer activities—such as a dunk tank and bouncy house—while getting their pets washed and vaccinated by vet tech students. This year, there will also be educational booths, a bake sale, an exotic animal petting zoo, and animal adoptions available.

Although cloaked in fun and games, this event is actually driven by charity.

Last year’s Dog Days of Summer collected more than $1,000, which was donated to the Friends in Need Animal Rescue and Sanctuary.

“I really liked how everyone worked together,” vet tech student Melanee Davis recalled from her experience last year. “I also enjoyed working on so many different breeds of dogs all in one day. Watching the clients and their dogs walk out happy was the highlight for me.”

This year, all proceeds will go to the Provo City Fire Department for the purchase of rescue equipment for animals.

“The Dog Days of Summer event is SCNAVTA’s (Broadview’s Student Chapter of the National Association of Veterinary Technicians in America) signature event every summer,” vet tech instructor Heather Bird said. “In addition to being a great fundraiser, we do a lot of good for local pets and their owners. I love this event and look forward to it every year!”

Don’t miss this year’s Dog Days of Summer on August 24, 2013, starting at 9 a.m.
