Hidden Zen: Out of the Ordinary Places to Study
Published on November 30, 2016 by Tom Westover
The library. The coffee shop. The bookstore. Most college students study in pretty typical spots. On nice days in the summer, they may even move the studying outdoors. However, overall, there is little creativity when it comes to finding the perfect place to study. Here are several ideas for out of the ordinary places you can go to study for your next exam:
- Hotel Lobby. If you live in a larger city, you have a wide variety of large hotels surrounding you. These hotels often house conference centers that host people from around the country on a daily basis. Hotels can be a wonderful place to study. They are often decorated in a calming manner. There are nooks and crannies everywhere, and you can find the perfect spot to settle in. The temperature is usually perfect. They are open 24/7, and noise is never a problem. People are always milling about, and no one will even give you a second look if you are working quietly and patronizing the hotel store for your snacks and coffee. However, be respectful, and don’t use the hotel wifi unless they have a public wifi or paid wifi service available.
- Hospital Cafeteria. This is another unusual choice. However, hospitals are also open 24/7. During the day, you will have a full service meal option readily available. These areas are never full, and you can always find a great place to spread out. At night, the full cafeteria may not be open for service, but often there is at least a coffee shop open throughout the night. The environment is quiet in the evenings, and doctors, nurses, and family members seeking a bit of quiet time will be the only ones to wander through. Calming and comforting, this could be the perfect spot for you.
- Airport. Some people hate the airport, but if you don’t mind it, it can be a great spot. There are lounges galore, spots to sit, snacks, free wifi, and bathroom access. In the early morning and late evening hours, airports are virtually deserted, and the peace and quiet they offer is second to none, making them an amazing place to concentrate. There is often an expectation that people at the airport do not want to interact with one another, so there is a very slim chance anyone will try and strike up a conversation or force you to engage in small talk.
- Gym. People always study on the treadmill, so this may not seem like an unusual place to study, however, there are more places to study at the gym than on the machinery. Somewhere at your gym there is a place for people to gather and sit down. It may be at a juice bar, in a lobby, beside the pool, or even in the locker room. One of these areas may be a good place for you to get away and study. Especially during the day or late in the evening before closing, the gym is fairly empty. You can get in a study session and then hop straight into your workout.
