Another Day in Paradise: Seventh Annual Dog Wash
Published on August 13, 2015 by Karen Newmeyer
August is the high point of the summer, especially at Broadview University, Orem. August 8th was the date for the seventh annual Dog Days of Summer and Everything Animal Fair. This is the social event of the summer, hosted by the Broadview University-Orem vet tech program and SCNAVTA (Student Chapter of the National Association of Veterinary Technicians in America). It ran like a well-oiled machine. Some of the events included:
- Dog Wash & Towel Dry
- Nail Clipping & Ear Cleaning
- Exotic Animal Petting Zoo
- Educational Booths & Activities
- Hot Dogs on the Barbie
- Bouncy House and Dunking Tank
All services performed by the vet tech students were under the direct supervision of veterinarian Dr. Yoeny Calas-Dobson, owner of the Riverwoods Pet Hospital, which also provided the vaccines and microchips at a deeply discounted rate. Also provided were rabies certificates and tags. Dr. Dobson has been practicing for over 20 years and has been a great supporter of Broadview University, Orem.
Each year the Dog Wash is focused on benefiting and raising funds for a specific organization. Last year, the beneficiary was the Utah County Sheriff’s Canine Division. The year before was to raise money to purchase animal resuscitation equipment for the Provo Fire Department. This year, the beneficiary of the Dog Wash was the Great Basin Wildlife Rescue. In attendance from Great Basin were a golden eagle and three owls along with their volunteer handlers.
While the focus of this event may have been on dog services, all animals were welcomed. The exotic animal petting zoo included snakes, rats, and gerbils. Over a hundred animal services were rendered, including washing, vaccinating, and microchipping.
While veterinary technician programs are offered at two other Broadview campuses in Utah, only the Orem campus has an ongoing program like the annual Dog Wash. Broadview University is an active community promoter of healthy and happy animals. They want all pet owners to be well informed and educated regarding the best care for their pets.
