More Than Luck: Orem Graduates Work Hard for Their Degrees

Campus director, Ryan Farley, quoting Samuel Goldwyn, said, “The harder I work, the luckier I get.”career college

This perhaps best summarizes the achievements of our Broadview University-Orem fall 2014 graduates.

At the ceremony, held Dec.19 at the beautiful Sleepy Ridge Garden Room, nine of 11 graduates and their families gathered to celebrate their success.

The student speaker, Andrew Whittle, graduating with his bachelor of science in business administration, spoke about the best advice he received while attending Broadview University. He was under a lot of stress and was considered taking a quarter off. Nathan Butterfield, who was dean of education at the time, encouraged him to hang tough and not take a break from his education. Andrew said it was difficult, but the end result was worth it.

Meanwhile, Broadview honored our “Student of the Quarter,” Marianne Miller, who received her associate of applied science in accounting. Marianne was an outstanding student and also earned a white cord for graduating with honors.

Our graduates included:

The ceremony’s keynote speaker, Mark Oldham, president of Liberty Press, told the graduates a story of a woman he hired. Although she had none of the skills required in the job description, he hired her because of what she said just before leaving the interview. She essentially told him that if he hired her he would never have to tell her to get busy and he would never have to tell her what to do. She would do everything needed before he even knew he needed it done.

He hired her, and she lived up to her word.

It isn’t enough to be lucky; you need to pick yourself up each time you fall and be totally committed to your goals.

In his brief but heartfelt closing remarks, Campus Director Ryan Farley said so much of success in life comes from hard work and continuing education. Just because they graduated, they are not done with learning.

As Abraham Lincoln said, “I do not think much of a man who is not wiser today than he was yesterday.”

Congratulations to our wonderful graduates! We will miss them and hope they come back to visit!
