And the Apple Award Goes To…

The South Jordan Chamber celebrated one of the most important jobs in our society during their Apple Award Ceremony. Teachers are at the root of our development and understanding of the world. The Chamber took time to recognize and applaud the work done by a select group of teachers in the South Jordan area at their Teacher Appreciation event. Included in this distinguished crowd was Broadview University-West Jordan’s Business Program Chair Debbi Macfarlane-Clayton.
Debbi received the Apple Award for her work with students inside of the classroom.
“What sets Debbi apart, what makes her such a phenomenal teacher for our school, is that she makes our students feel equal,” said Broadview’s Dean of Education Amanda Babcock. “Equal in the value of their viewpoints…treated equally with the respect they deserve. And, most importantly, equal in regards to their ability to achieve this thing they have set out to do.”
Much like her counterparts from the surrounding schools, the award stands as confirmation for what these teachers do. “My reaction is honored and grateful,” said Macfarlane-Clayton. “I got recognized for doing something I love and I think every single person who was honored felt the same way.”
The ceremony allowed the teachers, administrators and community to reflect on what our teachers do.
“One of the greatest obstacles in South Jordan and in Utah is to have to prepare qualified people,” said South Jordan Mayor Scott Osborne. “You are the reason why this will happen.”
Jordan School District Superintendent Patrice Johnson added, “I can never express in words what you do for our young people. You’re here today because you are a shining example of being an educator. You do the most noble work on the face of the earth.”
Macfarlane-Clayton concluded, “A good teacher is one that challenges the mind of the students to ask additional questions and want to understand. I think life experiences are our best teacher and when a teacher can mimic life, then the teacher is one of the best.”
