How To Face Adversity and Still Earn a College Degree

Broadview University broadview university– West Jordan prides itself in its history of providing top-notch education to students across the Salt Lake Valley, and helping each student achieve success by obtaining their associate, bachelor’s, or master’s degrees.

Many will agree that the journey is not always easy.

Some students are parents, single-parents, and even grand-parents. For many, the thought of going back to school seems distant due to their current financial situation, scheduling, transportation, lack of motivation, and on and on.

We had the pleasure of hearing from two wonderful examples of successful students at our graduation ceremony, Tamara Roberts and Lawrence Jameson.

For Tamara, one of many stumbling blocks was that her car had been stolen during a crucial time in her externship, meaning the loss of valuable time and energy.

degree in medical assisting“Without a car I could not get to my externship site….I had to miss a solid week when that happened,” Tamara said. “I had missed too much time and had to repeat my externship.”

“The greater part of our happiness or misery depends upon our dispositions, and not upon our circumstances.” -Martha Washington

“I quickly turned that negative attitude into a positive and thought to myself how lucky I was to actually get the opportunity to work at an alternate externship site,” said Tamara.

Through perseverance, hard work, help from friends and family, and a caring Medical Assisting Program Chair, Brooke Pearson, Tamara earned a degree in medical assisting.

“She [Pearson] never gave up on me and kept me going no matter how discouraged I would get,” said Tamara. “She portrays the exact description of a medical assistant, teacher, and friend.”

We also heard from Lawrence Jameson, who earned a nursing degree. Lawrence touched on some additional adversities that arose along the way–homework, and to be exact, the amounts of homework, coupled with their surreal due dates.

“Each week we were given a new batch of homework assignments,” said Lawrence. “Didn’t you think, how am I going to get it all done? It can’t be done!”

“The world ain’t all sunshine and rainbows. It’s a very mean and nasty place and I don’t care how tough you are it will beat you to your knees and keep you there permanently if you let it….nobody is gonna hit as hard as life. But it ain’t about how hard ya hit. It’s about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward.” –Rocky Balboa

Lawrence continued, “Somehow we persevebroadview universityred and found a way to get it all done. Somehow we found a way to overcome the challenge. Somehow we made it to this podium to pick up a degree today! Yeah! No matter what happens to us in the future, we won today. “

Congratulations to Tamara Roberts and Lawrence Jameson. Good luck in your careers, and in all your endeavors.
