Graduate Scott Hill addresses the crowd during spring graduation

It isn’t uncommon for a student to come back to teach at their alma mater. What is a little more rare is coming back to teach in their program just one month after graduating.  IT instructor Scott Hill isn’t your average student though. Prior to receiving a bachelor’s Information Technology degree from Broadview University, Scott received a bachelor’s degree from BYU and a Master’s Degree in Aeronautical Science.

While looking for a school to get his IT degree, Broadview’s environment was one of the factors that solidified his choice. “With my station in life, I didn’t need another big campus environment,” said Hill. “With a smaller class size, if you wanted to, you could meet everyone in the college–and get personal attention.”

The Desert Storm, Kosovo and Iraq War veteran had job offers after graduating, but the lure of the teaching lifestyle brought him back to the classroom. Scott previously taught as a flight instructor and spent seven years teaching ROTC classes at the University of Utah.

“[After graduating] I didn’t think about teaching, but thought, seriously, where I am going to go?” added Hill. “I already went through the daily grind and with teaching, I have enjoyed every minute of it.”

Since his hire, Scott has been in the unique place of understanding student concerns while being in the position to change things. “I’ll fight for the students where they need some of that value added,” remarked Hill. “As faculty, I can teach them to take ownership through a variety of techniques.”

And with the chance to teach students that Scott once called classmates, it is a special opportunity. “It’s fun to watch them; it’s been very cool,” replied Hill. “When you see the clue light come on with someone, there’s nothing more rewarding than that.”
