Think Pink: The Big Lifesaver Returns to Broadview University

(MERIDIAN) An effort to save lives is returning to Broadview University and it is reminding people to think pink. The Boise campus is once again teaming up with Saint Alphonsus Regional Medical Center to bring in its mobile mammography bus. As part of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the big pink bus will be set up in the campus parking lot on Wednesday, Oct. 16.

This 40-foot-long bus is part of an outreach program to encourage more women to get potentially lifesaving mammograms. It will be parked at Broadview University-Boise campus on Wednesday, October 16.

The 40-foot-long bus is part of an outreach program to encourage more women to get the potentially lifesaving exam. Idaho stats show mammograms are something women typically put off doing because they either cannot, do not, or will not take the time to do it. This is why the bus travels the region and provides the same screening services that can be obtained from Saint Alphonsus Regional Medical Center in Boise.

The service, which is typically done at zero cost to the patient, is available to women between the ages of 35 and 64. Insurance companies—which usually cover mammograms at 100 percent—are billed; grants are available for women who do not have insurance.

This will be the second time the bus has visited Broadview University. Earlier this year, 21 women had mammograms due to February’s event. One of those women who participated came back with a lifesaving diagnosis. She immediately received medical care, had a pre-cancerous mass removed, and is now on the road to recovery.

The woman’s best friend said, “If we wouldn’t have gone, we would have missed it and I could have possibly lost my best friend.”

“[February’s] event definitely exceeded our expectations for being held the first time at this location,” Jaime, a technician on the bus, said. “Our minimum goal is 13, so performing 21 mammograms in one day was awesome.”

The big pink bus will offer mammograms from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. If you or someone you know is interested, please call (208) 577-2936 to set up an appointment.
