Scooping Ice Cream Sprinkled with Bits of Charity

(BOISE) There aren’t a lot of things out there that taste better than free ice cream. In fact, about the only one I can think of would be free and sprinkled with little bits of charitable love. On Tuesday, April 8, that is exactly the kind of ice cream Broadview University will be scooping. The Boise campus is one of four groups in the Treasure Valley that will be guest scooping during Ben & Jerry’s 36th annual Free Cone Day.

Over the past two years, Broadview University has raised and donated more than $560 for Genesis Service Dogs during Ben & Jerry’s Free Cone Day.

Each year, Ben & Jerry’s chooses one day to offer free ice cream cones at all of its scoop shops around the globe. The company donates all of the ice cream while local stores invite guest scoopers to work behind the counter for tips.

For the third year in a row, Broadview University has been selected as one of the local guest scooper groups. All tips received will be given to the campus’s nonprofit community partner Genesis Service Dogs. Over the past two years, this event has raised more than $560 for the organization.

Genesis Service Dogs is a Meridian-based nonprofit organization that breeds, raises and trains service dogs. The group then donates its dogs to qualified children and adults with special needs—primarily focusing on military veterans with post-traumatic stress disorder.

“Last year, which was the most fun I have had in the five years since I have been doing this, we served more than 5,300 scoops of ice cream,” Matt Groll, the local Ben & Jerry’s owner, said.  “This year, it’s going to be a great day. We will have radio station Mix 106 broadcasting live. We will also have giveaways, coupons, calendars with coupons, and we will be sampling milkshakes. You’ve gotta have some fun and this is going to be the best place to do that.”

Community partner Scott Summerlin (right) proudly supports Broadview University’s community commitment. The campus has raised more than $560 for Genesis Service Dogs over the past two years at the annual Free Cone Day event.

“Thank you once again for the support of Broadview University,” Teri Buch, from Genesis Service Dogs, said. “Be sure and come on by and get your favorite flavor for the price of a donation. As an added bonus, we will also be providing puppy kisses!”

You are invited to stop by, get your free cone, and leave a few coins for this great cause on Tuesday, April 8, from 4 to 6 p.m., in Downtown Boise. The Ben & Jerry’s scoop shop is located at 103 North 10th Street.

The following are the four organizations participating in this year’s event:
Noon to 2 p.m. – Love Inc.
2 p.m. to 4 p.m. –  River Discovery
4 p.m. to 6 p.m. – Broadview University benefiting Genesis Service Dogs
6 p.m. to 8 p.m. – The Boy Scouts from Troop 40
