Why You Should Run a 5K This Fall

A quick scroll through social media on any given Saturday morning will show that countless numbers of your friends and colleagues are participating in 5K races. Instead of rolling your eyes at the fifteenth sweaty selfie that your old tennis teammate posts, medal and all, you should immediately find a 5K to run. Fall is a great time to add a run to your calendar.

No matter your fitness level, a 5K, equal to a little over 3 miles, is a perfect distance for beginners.  Most community 5Ks allow walkers to participate, too, and no one thinks twice if it takes you even an entire hour to complete the race. Popular apps and internet plans, such as Couch to 5K, give you step-by-step instructions on how to go from someone who can only walk to someone who can run a fairly quick 5K.

Getting off the couch or out from behind your desk is a great reason to participate in a 5K. Sometimes, you get so caught up in studying that you neglect our health. Training for a 5K can give you a deadline related to our exercise. This will give you a justification to put it on your calendar and to prioritize getting in your exercise just like you prioritize your assignments.

Another reason that you should consider running a 5K is that almost every race has some of its proceeds going to charity. Read the fine print closely, and you can determine just what percentage is helping others. Some more popular runs, like those that leave you covered in color, are a profit-making enterprise with very little money going to charity, while others donate all race proceeds to charity. There aren’t many times that getting in your workout can benefit others. Participating in a 5K is a great way to help others while helping yourself.

Running can also help you meet new people. Most cities have running clubs that get together multiple times a week to train and support one another. When everyone you know is a student, it is easy to get caught up complaining and feeling overwhelmed. If you are able to form friendships outside of school, it will help keep you grounded. Additionally, you never know when one of your running buddies may turn out to be a great networking contact for your future field.

Finishing a 5K also gives you a much-needed success. During college, it is easy to feel like the end is far away and that you may never reach your goals. However, setting the goal to complete a 5K and successfully completing the goal can give you a quick and easy victory. It is nice to be reminded that you can do what you put your mind to.

Registering for a 5K is an inexpensive way to invest in yourself and your health while you are in college. Instead of judging others for jumping on the 5K bandwagon, give it a try. There is a good chance you will be the next one posting a string of sweaty Saturday selfies.
