Aromatherapy for College Students

Aromatherapy is the science of using herbal scents to affect mood and health, and they are a cheap method of mood enhancement for college students. It is an ancient method and is referenced in the Bible and other ancient texts. Essential oils are the heart of aromatherapy, and they are much more powerful than plants and herbs, as they are distilled plants and herbs. They aren’t hard to come by, and they can be purchased from grocery or drug stores or internet sources.
While some people ingest these oils, it is not recommended. They can work just as well, and more safely, by applying to fabrics in the room or even a cotton ball, and inhale the scent. These oils can be combined with a carrier oil, such as vegetable oil or olive oil, and safely applied to the skin or rubbed into the hands to inhale. Some oils have already been diluted with a carrier oil, so read carefully to see what you are purchasing.
Worried about that test tomorrow? Can’t get to sleep? Then you need oils that will aid in sleep, and lavender and chamomile are essential oils that invite rest. They can be applied on a pillow case or the hands. You can also purchase inexpensive machines called infusers that will spread the scent in the room with an aerosol or vapor. You can even purchase pillows that have lavender infused into them!
Have trouble getting up in the morning? Or staying awake to finish that paper? Then you need to rely on the energizing oils such as rosemary, eucalyptus, peppermint, tea tree oil, or citrus oils. These can be combined into a power packed energy scent, or you can see which works best for you. Many people like peppermint or tea tree shampoos and body washes to get them invigorated in the morning shower.
Stressed to the max? There are even oils that can help to alleviate stress. Lavender and Frankincense are stress relievers, and geranium and rose are also calming scents. Bergamot inspires relaxation, as well as sandalwood and cedarwood.
Depressed or blue? The best scents for mood enhancing are bergamot, orange or grapefruit, and ylang-ylang. Sage and mint also help balance mood. Jasmine can also relax and uplift.
Have allergies or a cold? Didn’t get that flu shot? (Shame on you!) To help with nasal congestion or breathing problems, rub some eucalyptus or peppermint into your palms and breathe in deeply. You will get instant relief. You can also place a cloth sprinkled with these scents onto your throat or chest to keep breathing easier. Don’t forget the chicken soup!
You can add any essential oil with witch hazel or aloe vera juice at the ratio of 10 drops of oil and ½ cup of witch hazel or aloe vera, pour into a spray bottle and spray onto fabric or use as a perfume. You can also add any essential oil to your bath to create a bath soak to create the mood or benefits you desire. Just add 10 to 15 drops to your bath water.
