I had a chance to review some statistics about the growth projected in IT along with some interesting trends in our industry¬† in the United States and worldwide. This was part of a recent Microsoft IT Academy Event:¬† Climate Change: Cloud’s Impact on IT Organizations and Staffing.

The research was presented by Leigh-Anne Voigt, Sr. Content Research Manager at Microsoft and was based on a 2012 IDC ‚ÄúSkills Gap‚ÄĚ White Paper. The objective of the study was to determine the impact that cloud computing will have on the demand for skills through the end of 2015. 600 web-based surveys were conducted among IT Hiring Managers in June through July of 2012 across 10 countries and fielded by IDC . The study concluded that increasing numbers of IT organizations will move to the cloud, which will entail a learning curve for most IT professionals.¬† This will then create an IT skills gap that will increase over time.

This is good news for current IT students and gives IT schools the opportunity to shape curriculum to broaden coverage of specialized skills needed to support cloud offerings.  Schools can stress the importance of hands on experience with key technologies that enable cloud infrastructure. Cloud-enabled certification should also be promoted to help close the skills gap, and to help recipients find jobs more readily than those without such certification.

Here is a great infographic on the skills gap in IT.
