Broadview University has collaborated with MAT® (Muscle Activation Techniques) to deliver an online, module based pathway towards MAT® Certification.

These modules can be done at an individual pace and culminate with a required, on-site lab at the MAT® headquarters in Colorado.

The lower body module began March 26th, 2018 with the certification lab scheduled for the weekend of June 16-17th, 2018. The next upper body module begins June 25th, 2018 with the certification lab scheduled for the weekend of September 15-16th, 2018.

Registration for the online module may be approved up until 8 weeks prior to the lab weekend with approval based on previous experience and academic achievement. The opportunity to participate in the certification lab will require successful completion of all online course and practical work.

What is MAT® (Muscle Activation Techniques®)?

According to the MAT® website, MAT® is:

  • A revolutionary approach to the assessment and correction of muscular imbalances, joint instability, and limitations in range of motion within the human body.
  • A non-invasive technique, designed to balance the muscular system of people of all ages.
  • A unique systematic format used to "jump-start" the muscles in order for them to function with maximum efficiency.

Here are a few things you should know as you consider registering for these modules

The Lower Body Module started March 26th. The Upper Body Module starts June 25th. Registration is open up to 8 weeks prior to the lab dates.

Suggested completion time is 12 weeks. However, those with advanced training and education in a related field and/or those with significant time to study may be able to complete the module in a shorter amount of time. All registrants are required to have successfully completed and passed the online training portion prior to attending the Lab Weekend. Weekend certification labs require a minimum of 10 participants. In the event of low enrollment, registrants will have the opportunity to schedule the next available certification lab. Registration is $3195. Participants will be responsible for purchasing their text book and responsible for their travel for the lab.

MAT340 Applications and Assessment of Lower Body Muscle Function I and II, 120 Hours

Prerequisite Participants must be a licensed therapist, or must obtain undergraduate coursework in anatomy and physiology and/or hold a nationally recognized fitness certification with a minimum of two years of experience as a fitness professional.

The objective: the Muscle Activation Techniques® lower body certification module will provide an understanding of the MAT® skillset to Participants who have knowledge in the health and fitness field. This lower body module studies the MAT® approach to assessment and correction of muscular imbalances in the human body. Participants are trained on the MAT® tools used to identify restrictions in joint instability relating to muscle tightness and weakness. Participants gain an understanding of the unique systematic format provided through Muscle Activation Techniques® in order for them to help their clients function with maximum efficiency and balance out the muscular system.

Successful completion of the pre-lab module, the lab weekend workshop, and passing the certification exam at the workshop, will allow Participants to become certified in MAT® lower body techniques.

MAT350 Applications and Assessments of Upper Body Muscle Function I and II, 120 Hours

Prerequisite Participants must be a licensed therapist or have been certified in the MAT® Lower Body.

The objective: participants will be introduced to Muscle Activation Techniques for the upper body and explore the relationship of muscle function to joint stability, relating to joint mobility. Participants will evaluate range of motion in upper body movements and use the assessments to identify areas of muscle weakness with a focus on the shoulder girdle.

Study includes applications of isolated muscle strength testing, palpation of muscle attachment points along with corrective isometrics, and reinforcement exercises. Participants will investigate Muscle Activation Techniques for the upper body and examine the relationship of muscle function to joint stability, relating to joint mobility. Participants will evaluate range of motion in upper body movements and use the assessments to identify areas of muscle weakness.

Further study includes applications of isolated muscle strength testing, including break testing and neuroproprioceptive response testing; palpation of muscle attachment points along with corrective isometrics; and reinforcement exercises.

Successful completion of the pre-lab module, the lab weekend workshop, and passing the certification exam at the workshop, will allow Participants to become certified in MAT® upper body techniques.

MAT360 Applications and Assessment of Trunk and Spine Muscle Function and Applications and Assessment of Cervical Spine Muscle Function, 120 Hours

Prerequisite Participants must be a licensed therapist or have been certified in the MAT® Lower Body.

The objective: participants will investigate Muscle Activation Techniques for the trunk and spine and explore the relationship of muscle function to joint stability, relating to joint mobility. Participants will evaluate range of motion in movements of the trunk and spine and use the assessments to identify areas of muscle weakness in the trunk and spine.

Further study includes applications of isolated muscle strength testing, palpation of muscle attachment points along with corrective isometrics, and reinforcement exercises. Participants will investigate Muscle Activation Techniques for the cervical spine and explore the relationship of muscle function to joint stability, relating to joint mobility. Participants will evaluate range of motion in movements of the cervical spine and use the assessments to identify areas of muscle weakness in the cervical spine. Further study includes applications of isolated muscle strength testing, palpation of muscle attachment points along with corrective isometrics, and reinforcement exercises. This course will provide information for Participants to learn the complexities of the trunk and spine muscular systems to help practitioner's better address muscle dysfunction in these areas.

Successful completion of the pre-lab module, the lab weekend workshop, and passing the certification exam at the workshop, will allow Participants to become certified in MAT® trunk and spine techniques.

MAT370 Muscle Activation Techniques Intermediate Level Theory and Applications and Assessments of Small Motion Muscle Function, 120 Hours

Prerequisite Participants must be a licensed therapist or have been certified in the MAT® Lower Body.

The objective: participants will investigate Muscle Activation Techniques for the hand, foot and temporomandibular joint (TMJ) and explore the relationship of muscle function to joint stability, relating to joint mobility. Participants will evaluate range of motion in movements of the foot, hand, and TMJ and study normal TMJ function versus TMJ dysfunction. They will use the assessments to identify areas of muscle weakness in the foot, hand and TMJ. Further study includes applications of isolated muscle strength testing, palpation of muscle attachment points along with corrective isometrics, and reinforcement exercises.

Participants will review and gain a better understanding of the importance of the evaluation and assessment process in their MAT practice. Participants will also gain an understanding on how to stress the body in order to duplicate the stresses that may result in recurring injuries.

Successful completion of the pre-lab module, the lab weekend workshop, and passing the certification exam at the workshop, will allow Participants to become certified in MAT® these techniques.
