There’s a big demand for medical assistants today. In fact, The U.S. Department of Labor’s Occupational Outlook Handbook predicts this field is expected to grow much faster than the average occupation. This growth, according to the Department of Labor, is due in part to an aging population and an increasing number of facilities.

Today on the Broadview blog, we’ll take a look at this profession and how BVU prepares you for a rewarding career with its associate degree in medical assistant.

Medical Assistant Overview

Medical assistants are a vital part of a healthcare team, from the front office to the exam room. They can perform a variety of functions, including:

Some medical assistants may have specializations based on where they work. For example, someone working with an eye doctor may have different day-to-day duties than someone else employed in a surgery center.

Hands-on experience is an important component of our medical assistant program. All BVU students participate in a six-week externship program. This on-site learning opportunity allows you to apply what you’ve learned in the classroom in a real medical setting. We’ll help secure an externship site for you, typically at a facility within 50 miles of your home campus.
