There are a lot of career options out there. Choosing the right one can be hard. Finding the right one can bring lifelong joy. The stakes are high. What’s the right decision for you? If you are thinking about becoming a veterinary technician but are hesitating before taking the plunge, then answering these five questions should help you make up your mind.

1. Do you love animals?

Most people love their pets. But there are some people who don’t just love their own pets, they love everybody else’s pets as well. Does that sound like you? You can’t pass up a dog or cat on the street and would go the extra mile for an animal you’ve never seen before. If so, did you know that’s actually a job you can do as a vet tech? Anyone who loves animals that much should seriously think about becoming a vet tech.

2. Are you unafraid to get your hands dirty?

If you aren’t afraid to get your hands dirty, then you should consider becoming a vet tech. In veterinary clinics, zoos, and many other places, vet techs are the ones who spend the most time giving hands-on treatment to animals. It’s dirty work, but if you want to keep animals healthy and aren’t afraid to get your hands dirty to do it, then you would make a great vet tech.

3. Do you enjoy farms, zoos, and animal shelters?

If you love the zoo, farms, or animal shelters, consider becoming a veterinary technicians. Vet techs work in all those places, and many more. Wherever there are animals, there are vet techs. And if you like going to these places on your free time, why not become a vet tech and get paid for it?

4. Are you interested in science and technology?

Vet techs should love science almost as much as they love animals. They are trained to use the latest technology to assist veterinarians and provide care for animals. Science is the bedrock of veterinary medicine, and if you love animals and science, becoming a vet tech is a great way to connect those two passions.

5. Are you afraid you can’t do it?

If you are afraid you can’t do it, then you should definitely try. You wouldn’t be worried if it wasn’t what you truly wanted. So go ahead and try. Becoming a vet tech isn’t as hard as you might think. You only need a two-year degree from an program like the veterinary technology associate degree at  Broadview University, and then you’ll be able to start your career.

But Is Becoming a Vet Tech Worth It?

When choosing a career it is important to be practical. But being practical doesn’t mean you can’t follow your heart. If you become a vet tech, you won’t get rich, but you won’t go hungry either. There’s steady work, and lots of job openings across the country. And most importantly, you’ll be able to help all kinds of different animals every day, and that makes it all worthwhile.
