National Library Week at Broadview University-West Jordan
Published on April 27, 2015 by jhendricks
Last week was National Library Week. Libraries around the world celebrated the week by highlighting their resources and services and asking people to share their stories about libraries and reading. Among these libraries was the library at Broadview University – West Jordan. As part of our school’s high commitment to academic learning, our college has a library with a thousands of books on the shelves and millions of articles, along with 20,000 eBooks, available on our website. The library held an Open House on Thursday, April 16, where students could get food and tour the library. They could also comment on books, comics, and other topics on special boards set up around the school.
Why does Broadview University – West Jordan feel like it’s important to have a library? It’s because libraries have a valuable role to play in college students’ academic careers. In 2013, a study by Krista Soria, Jan Fransen, and Shane Nackerud found that library use correlates to higher grades. Specifically, they found that first- year undergraduate students who used the library had the following advantages relative to their peers:
- A higher GPA their first semester
- More retention – more people choosing to stay in school – after their first quarter

In the study, library usage was counted by using a variety of services – book checkouts, interlibrary loan, computer usage in the libraries, and research instruction by librarians – that all Broadview students have the opportunity to access. A strong library is just one of the ways Broadview University – West Jordan sets up our students for success. Other services include our tutoring program, the Academic Resource Center, and the online tutoring service SmartThinking.
Broadview University – West Jordan does this for our students with the goal of helping them launch successful new careers. If you’re interested in learning more about us, please talk to an admissions representative today!
