Test Out of Class to Save Time and Money

Broadview University (BVU) is proud of the ways we encourage our students to finish their degrees early. If you’ve already learned the skills and knowledge our students need to acquire, there are different ways to demonstrate this and avoid taking classes you don’t need. One of these ways is the Advanced Standing Tests, or “test outs.”
Test outs at Broadview University-West Jordan allow students to show they understand a course’s core concepts by taking an exam on them. You get one attempt at it and need to show you understand by passing with 70 percent or better. If you pass, you get credit for the class, and don’t have to spend the time or money to take it! Many classes can be passed this way, including general education courses and program-specific courses.
One student who understands the value of test-outs is Jennifer Kalchik, who tested out of two courses in her first quarter at Broadview University-West Jordan. In an interview she shared her experiences:
1. What program are you in?
I am in the veterinary technology program.
2. Can you tell us a little about yourself?
I am a 43 year old mother of five. I have been working with dogs since 2007, as a behavior and nutrition consultant. I decided to attend BVU to further my education in working with animals by exploring veterinary medicine. Now that my youngest child is 11 years old, I feel this is the right time for me to explore a new career in a clinical setting.
3. Where did you learn that you can test out of classes?
I learned I could test out of a couple classes from someone in the education department at (Broadview University-West Jordan) who called me to discuss this option.
4. What are the advantages for other students of testing out of classes?
The advantages of testing out of classes are, 1) Saves time; you don’t have to take a 10-11 week course. 2) Saves money. No need to pay tuition. 3) You receive those credits right away
5. Would you do it again?
Yes, I would definitely do it again if I felt it was possible. Even if you do not pass, at least you tried. You can still take the course, so there is nothing to lose.
Talk to your dean of education about how to save money by testing out of classes. Not all classes have test-outs, so for a complete list of test-outs, please contact the dean of education at your campus.
